President Welcome Message

2022 was marked by a major turning point: on the 24th of February, the invasion of Ukraine shook the world as we knew it.

All Members have united in support, yet the media landscape was changed dramatically overnight, and the aftermath is bitter.

Producing and delivering independent news is a matter of stable democracies, and citizens are still turning to public service media for reliable information despite changing habits.

As the funding of PSM continues to shrink, uniting has become vital.

Vital for louder advocacy, vital for efficient investigation, vital for high-quality productions, vital for fair prominence.

It’s also the power of our united offer that has made it possible to secure the Olympic Games for audiences to enjoy free to air until 2032. A game-changing deal for us.

I strongly believe in the power of our Union.

As the largest Newsroom in Europe and the strongest contributor to the creative industry, we have the power to deliver stories that have an immediate impact on societies as well as on future generations.

For a fair and sustainable future, we shall keep innovating and learning from one another.

I am proud to share with you the numbers that this report is presenting and that reflect the work that the EBU has done in 2022.

Director General Welcome Message

This has been an extraordinary year for the EBU and I’m incredibly proud of the work of all our staff in these testing times.

Despite the challenges posed by war, international uncertainty, and an economic crisis, so much we have been working towards in recent years has fallen into place.

• We’ve won back the media rights for the Olympic Games (2026-2032) in what I hope will be a groundbreaking moment for sport and public service media.

• We’ve strengthened our News Exchange, developed the Social Newswire and re-launched News Events.

• We’ve supported our Members with innovation, providing practical tools and products such as EuroVox, Peach and the Newsdeck.

• We’ve helped our Members in their transformation journeys – be that with digital, diversity or future workplaces.

• We’ve consolidated and invested in our Brussels team and reinforced our Legal and Policy arm.

• We’ve built on the success of the Eurovision Song Contest across platforms.

We’ve also seen the sale of our commercial subsidiary, Eurovision Services, which we hope will ensure that it has the necessary investment and knowhow to continue to provide Members and clients with the world-class services for news and live events for which it is so renowned.

And there is much more that you can read about in this Annual Report.

None of this would have been possible without the help, encouragement, and guidance of our public service media members. All of them have stepped up to support us and each other in so many ways over the last year, no more so than with the incredible assistance they’ve provided to colleagues in Ukraine during this terrible war.

We are grateful to everyone that has worked with us to help deliver our mission over the last 12 months. As the centenary year for public service media draws to a close, there can have been no better demonstration of the huge contribution our Members make both to society and to democracy.
